At PsychoGraphic Media, Inc., we encounter a wide range of financial obligations that any website of our magnitude has to deal with. Our extremely large user-base, combined with our tireless production of rich media content, results in Web hosting costs that can easily reach 3 figures. In order to offset these costs, we host advertisements provided by Google’s AdSense program. These ads are generated automatically and inserted into our posts and RSS feeds. Why Do Some Ads Say “Ads by PsychoGraphicMedia”?

When you put Google ads on your site, Google sends a bot to your site to “read” the content and determine what your site is about. That way Google can show ads on your site that are related to whatever you’re talking about. The problem is… PsychoGraphic Media isn’t really about anything specific. Our site is more like a random assortment of crazy thoughts. The result is… Google doesn’t know what ads to put up here. When Google determines that a given page (*cough* our home page *cough*) is a crazy mess unfit for advertisements, it shows public service announcements instead. PSAs are like ads… only uglier and more useless. They say things like “Click here to solve World hunger!” Here at PsychoGraphic Media, we don’t believe in helping others, especially not poor people. We think starvation builds character. Therefore, we have opted for Google’s alternative to PSAs… which is to show ads from other services whenever Google decides our site isn’t good enough for their ads. Unfortunately, we don’t have any other ad services, so we had to make up our own ads. It took a lot of programming and Photoshopping… but ultimately we were able to accomplish our goal: don’t feed the poor.
